Leader: Praise the Lord with the harp; People: make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.

Leader: Sing to him a new song;

People: play skillfully, and shout for joy.

Leader: For the word of the Lord is right and true;

People: he is faithful in all he does. Leader: The Lord loves righteousness and justice;

People: the earth is full of his unfailing love.

Let us open our hearts to God in worship!

SCRIPTURE READING Mark 6:30-34

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. 31Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by

yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” 32So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. 33But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.

34When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

The Word of God for the People of God.

Thanks be to God.

SCRIPTURE

Ecclesiastes 3:1-13

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn

and a time to dance, 5a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. 9What do workers gain from their toil? 10I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.

MESSAGE Rhythm of Rest

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Pastor: This is a moment given by God to confess our sins against each other, all that God has created, and God. Let us take this moment to account for the ways in which we have not

embodied what it means to be created in the image of God.

People: Holy God, we confess that too often we have not been open to the rhythms of life you offer to us. We let ourselves be put off your pace and allow ourselves to wander off into our own songs. Too often the melodies of the world confuse us. We have led ourselves and others to paths that are not according to your loving pace and direction. Help us pay attention with all of our senses. Make our dancing faithful; help us take the risks that are part of letting you lead. Pull us back into your rhythms. Clean our hearts, purify our hands and steady our feet that we might know and share your blessings.
